UNCLE DARRYN!!!!!

Samson William Rose was born this evening at 20:13 (GMT+11). He weighs 3.62kg and is 53cm long. Both Michelle (his mother, my sister) and Samson are doing well.

I called them and I heard his first sneeze. I am here in London, so I missed some of the excitement, but with a combination of IM, Skype and SkypeOut I managed to almost be there.

I will be his favourite uncle.

[update] Honey has put the photos up on her blog.

Amsterdam to London

Yesterday I flew into London with Mel, Jem, Jan and John. They were all visiting me in Amsterdam over the weekend, Jan and John on their own World Tour, Mel and Jem because there was a long weekend in the UK. We all had a good time, with some tasty meals, tasty drinks and memorable experiences.

I am staying with Mel and Jem in their house here in South Ealing, a nice place and not far from transport

Tomorrow night I am going out for drinks with a few friends from the Datacom days, it will be good to see them again.

I return to Australia early on the morning of Friday the 9th September, in time for Adam’s buck’s party the next day, and the imminent arrival of my first nephew, Sampson.

heb je even voor mij

van Frans Bauer

Jalalalala, jalalalala
Ik kwam jou tegen oheo,
jij was verlegen oheo.

Jallalalala, jalalalala

Ik zit te dromen oheo,
of jij zult komen oheo. Laat het me weten oheo,

Jalalalalala Jalalalala

This is such a lame song, but I can’t get it out of my head.

Like rain on your wedding day*

Tonight someone was speaking to me in Dutch and I didn’t realise it. I just understood as if they were speaking English.

So I had “the moment” on one of my last nights in Amsterdam. Oh! Cruel fate, why do you mock me?

I will really miss this city. There is so much that I didn’t see.

*note to family: the title of this post refers to the Alanis Morissette song “Ironic”, and is not some coded message about my emotional state. So stop worrying.

I think that this track…

…has the best stereo intro of any song. Please note that I am referring to the remix from the “Live and rare” album.

Welkom bij Dumpsdorp, populatie: mij

Last night Kirsten sat down and announced that she was breaking up with me. The reason given was that we have different priorities for the future: I intend to someday have a family, she does not. Whilst I agree with that assessment, I would have preferred a different solution (i.e. doing it my way).

The universal response has been shock. Our families and friends, and myself, did not see this coming. It always seemed that we were “meant to be”. I have always been aware that Kirsten is very commitment-phobic and values her independence above all else, but I did not expect this.

I have never been the dumpee before, having always been the initiator of a breakup, and I would say that it is a bit easier on this side of the fence. I do not have the guilt of having hurt someone close to me.

I now have less than three weeks left in Europe before I return to Australia for the birth of my first nephew and the wedding of my best friend. The plan was to stay for 2 weeks and then return to NL, but this will not be happening. So I have a bit over 2 weeks left to fit in 6 months of planned travel. I will go to Antwerp in the next few days to buy chocolates for my sister, and perhaps from there go on to Paris. Mel and Jem, Jan and John arrive in A’dam on Friday and are spending the long weekend with us here, after which I return to London with Mel and Jem. I will spend a week with them, return to Amsterdam for one day to say goodbye to everyone, then off to KL and then home.

I don’t yet know what to do after that, but when I do, Dear Reader, you will be one of the first to know.

Lago Maggiore, Italy

On Friday night we left for Italy with Marcel and Sharon, two of our friends who had invited us to their holiday house on Lago Maggiore in northern Italy. Marcel had just taken delivery of a new BMW and was quite keen to test it on the autobahns in Germany, so that is the route we took. We travelled from Nederland, through Germany and Switzerland to Italy, taking about 8 hours, including stops. I made sure that we stopped in each country along the way: if I got out and stood on the ground I could legitimately claim to have been in the country.

We arrived at Lago Maggiore at daybreak, and found our way to the house in Ronco di Ghiffa (not to be confused with the many towns named Ronco along the banks of the lake). We were all pretty tired, so after a beer we all went to bed. There I remained for the rest of the day.

For dinner that night (Saturday) we went to the restaurant by SS Trinita, run by a lovely family. I had an entree of ravioli porcini, followed by a main of polenta gorgonzola porcini, made with wild mushrooms picked from the surrounding forest. It was the first time I had ever eaten gorgonzola and I was pleasantly surprised. The house red went down well, and despite having slept all day we were all in bed at a reasonable hour.

Sunday was a bit cloudy, so Kirsten and Marcel convinced me to go with them and climb the nearby mountain above the house, about 500m above our elevation. I put on two blister pads and followed along. The climb up was quite steep and within minutes we were all out of breath, but it was clear that I was the worst, and I was therefore sent to be point man. About halfway up it started to rain, but as we were in the forest we did not get very wet. We finally made it to the top, and by a miracle I was still conscious at the time.

The downhill part of the walk, although significantly longer, was very gently sloped. This gave us time to enjoy the scenery and location. The forest floor was littered with acorns and chestnuts. I don’t know why I didn’t bring any chestnuts home. There were a lot of mushrooms, many that I am sure I identified as porcini, but it was too risky to actually pick and eat them. When we got to the bottom we were coincidentally at SS Trinita again, so inside we went for a refreshing beer. Sharon joined us for the second one before we had to go back to the house for dinner.

It was my job to cook the BBQ dinner, as penance for a previous BBQ incident (Dutch sausages are very high in fat and cause fires with dense black smoke). Weber-style BBQs are common in Europe, but they do not use heat beads, they use actual charcoal, as in pre-burned wood. This has the advantage of being quick to get to heat but it burns out quickly. I made the most of my time and had 3 courses of meat cooked before the fire was too cold.

After the enjoyable meal Marcel lit the outdoor fireplace, the hardwood taking some time to get alight, until the secret weapon was used. It is a special trumpet for blowing on coals. A great tool. Once the fire was lit and cosy Marcel opened the keg of Beck’s that was in the beer fridge, and he, Kirsten and I enjoyed many glasses in front of the fire and listening to soft music. A great time.

Monday started with fine weather, so it was decided that we would go out on the lake in Marcel’s speedboat. The water was reasonably flat, so there wasn’t a lot of shock as we planed to the fuel station. After filling up we decided to go to one of the islands, and as Marcel wanted to enjoy the trip I was given pilot duties. I went very well until a large wave from a very fast boat’s wake swamped us and soaked everything on board, luckily my cameras were in a watertight bag. I felt a bit bad for getting everyone wet, but the sun was out and we dried out a bit. We made it to the islands after going past some very old buildings on the shoreline, one looking a bit like the Disney castle.

We passed Isola Madre and Isola Pescatore before circling Isola Bella, searching for a good swimming spot. We settled on a spot 200m from shore, out of the main traffic. I stopped the boat and we abandoned ship. The water was much warmer than I expected, probably 20

dat kan niet, yet again

I come from a country where businesses want you to give them money. In many cases, the purpose of a business is to get money from people.

A different philosophy is used in the Netherlands. The purpose of businesses here is solely to employ people, and those people are employed to say “that is not possible” (dat kan niet).

An example, common exchange:

Darryn: “hello business, I would like to give you money for your goods and/or services”
Dutch business: “that is not possible”

I am charged $5 by my Australian bank every time I use an ATM here. So I want to get a Dutch bank account.

The first step is to get a social security number. That took a month, 7 phone calls and 2 visits to the tax office. On my last, and successful, visit, I was told nine times that giving me a number was not possible. One of the reasons, told to me while holding my passport on the work permit page, was that I did not have a work permit. Having a work permit is not considered proof that you have a work permit. Luckily I had the letter from the government that said “you have a work permit, the official permit is in your passport”. So I got the sofinummer.

Two weeks ago I tried to get a bank account. I had ID, I had my sofinummer, I had every document I could think of. Dat kan niet. To open a bank account, I need a contract that lists my current address. They suggested I bring in my mobile phone contract. I pointed out that you can’t get a mobile phone contract without a bank account number. I asked what I could do. She just looked at me. The conversation was over.

So I sent in an expired cashback coupon to the mobile phone company in the hope that they would send me back a letter with my address printed on it. Last week the letter came, just as I has hoped. As a bonus, they gave me the cashback as well.

Today I went in to the bank, armed with my passport, my driver’s licence, my international driver’s licence, my official sofinummer certificate, all documentation relating to my visa, the mobile phone letter, and all of my other documents. I even brought a few hundred euros cash in case they needed a large deposit to open an account.

Dat kan niet.

It is not possible to open a bank account in the Netherlands without an employment contract with a Dutch company, and proof of income. I explained that I was doing work on the internet, which has no borders and am not employed by an official Dutch company. I explained that I had money which I wanted to give to the bank. I was told that I should have made an appointment, and when I get a job I can come in to make an appointment to apply for a bank account.

It will not surprise you to learn that you cannot get paid in the Netherlands without a Dutch bank account, they only do direct deposit into Dutch accounts. One of the required fields on an employment contract is bank account number.

I feel like a latter-day Yossarian.

Exception: None of the foreign companies I have dealt with here suffer from this. I have had business with both Sony and Sunglass Hut and both have given fantastic service, politely replacing broken goods that I did not even buy in the country, with no questions asked. The employees that I dealt with were Dutch.
