I have recently consolidated all of my home computers and servers into one notebook in preparation for travel. With only one computer, Kirsten and I now share. Being the tyrant that I am, I made her a “Limited User”. It turns out that this is not without a price.
If you are not an Administrator of a Windows XP machine, you cannot use ASPI. This might not mean much to most of my readers, let me translate: you cannot rip CD’s. It turns out that this is a sensible security precaution, as Bad People might use ASPI to do Bad Things. But I want Kip to be able to rip CD’s when I am not around, so I sought out the answer.
The answer is: ForceASPI 1.8. The official site seems to be down, perhaps brought down by Adaptec, whose drivers they appropriate. The google cache will give you the instructions, and a search for forceaspi18.zip will give you the file.
Allow me to mirror the instructions:
- Run dumpASPI to backup your current ASPI layer
- Run instASPI to install the new ASPI layer
- Reboot your PC
- Run aspichk to see if everything worked OK
Now AudioGrabber is happy, and it is now free (although I did pay for it, back in the day).

Serve this filling soup with some warm crusty bread. This recipe makes enough for six entreés (Americans: appetizers) and is suitable for people who do not eat red meat.
500g white fish fillets, cut into small (2cm) cubes
500g other seafood (prawns, scallops, lobster, crab etc).
1 litre fish stock
1 leek, chopped finely
1 carrot, peeled and cubed
1 stalk celery, cubed
1 large potato, cubed
1/3 cup flour
butter
300ml cream
1/3 cup finely chopped parsley
salt and ground pepper
Heat some butter in a large saucepan, add the vegetables and cook over low heat for 5 minutes or until they have softened and are slightly golden.
Add the flour and cook for one minute.
Add the fish stock, stirring for 5 minutes or until it boils. Simmer, uncovered, over a low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the fish and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often.
Add the rest of the seafood, most of the parsley and the cream. Stir and cook for 5 minutes without boiling. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Server immediately, garnished with the rest of the parsley and some crusty white bread.

This afternoon I passed the exam 70-221 Designing a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure. Based on my reckoning, this will now make me an MCSE in Windows 2000, the culmination of a process that I started almost six years ago. Of course, six years ago there was no Windows 2000 and so most of my earlier exams do not count towards my MCSE.
With the achievement of the MCSE, in the past 3 months I have met the requirements for, and been awarded: MCSE 2000; CompTIA A+ 2003; CompTIA Project+ 2003 and the EXIN Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management (ITIL). I have been busy collecting certifications for the increasingly impending Netherlands job hunt. Just the Diploma to go.
[update 29-1-2005] Just got my official transcript - I am not only an MCSE in Windows 2000, but also in Windows NT 4.0, so I guess my old efforts did not go to waste. Bonus!
