Recipe: Neck Chop Stew

This is a variation of a recipe passed down to me by my maternal grandmother. It is a great, cheap, hearty Winter meal.

1-2kg Lamb Neck Chops
1 carrot
2 onions
1-2 cups pearl barley
sprig rosemary
A few sprigs of thyme
4-6 bay leaves
cracked pepper
corn flour to thicken
salt to taste

In a large pan combine all of the ingredients except the salt. Cover with water and bring to the boil, then reduce to a low heat and simmer slowly, covered, for an hour. Remove the lid and cook uncovered. When the meat is almost falling from the bones and the liquid has reduced to stew consistency, remove from heat and stir in some cornflour (mixed with water). Season to taste. Serve with mashed potato and green beans. Serves 4-6.

XIII Mousing Problem, Darryn can help.

If you have a problem with your mouse in the game XIII, then this is what worked for me:
Change your mouse settings in windows so that it is at its minimum possible sensitivity. To do this, go to Control Panel | Mouse | Pointer Options (tab) | Select a pointer speed. Move the slider to the absolute left, so that it is as slow as it can get. Then crawl your mouse over to your XIII icon and play. The game should be fine now. This obviously doesn’t solve the problem, since you have to change the setting back in order to use windows, but it is certainly a work around. After changing this one setting I was able to play XIII.

I don’t know if this makes any difference, but some people suggest that you turn off ‘Enhance pointer precision’. This alone made no difference to me.

Live!

Spong got me to play PGR2 on Xbox Live last night, as he was hosting. I haven’t played on Live for months as Kip was getting jealous that I would talk to strangers on Live when I could have been talking to her, and I cut down a bit. I guess I got used to it and forgot that I had the capacity to play Live, that and I felt guilty playing as I always have work to do. Kirsten is away at uni and I have finished my uni work, so last night was a good time to return to the Live world. As soon as I loaded Gotham it all came flooding back; the sights, the sounds, the smells. It truly is a great game, although I am not great at it. I failed to finish last on only two races, once because the guy I beat was concentrating entirely on crashing in to me, and once because the same guy stopped short of the finish line and then tried to reverse into me, with the intention of crashing. I really need* to practise more.

Will I ever escape it?

I just spent more than 20 minutes with a user at work solving numerous problems. They are:

  1. When the computer is SHUT DOWN at the end of the day, it is no longer usable. There is nothing on the screen.
  2. After shutting down the computer, if the user wants to use the computer, the user has to press the power button in order to turn the computer on.
  3. When the user unplugs the network cable and takes the computer home, and does not connect to any other network, the user is no longer able to access network resources.

Apparently these are new problems, they have only popped up recently.

the new beckham

In 1981, when I was six, I was the left fullback for the Colo Cougars Under 7’s soccer team. We had good forwards and so the ball never came to our end of the field. A game of soccer consisted of myself, the other fullback and the goalie making mud pies in the goal box. I never learned any soccer skills.

This was certainly evident tonight when I played indoor soccer for the first time. Dave from work has organised a weekly 5-a-side match in a high school gym and tonight was week two. I was a bit nervous before the game as I cannot kick the ball within 20 degrees of my intended target, and I would be playing against Pommies, who were born with soccer boots on. This turned out to be an accurate prediction.

The game was dominated by 4 or 5 players with the rest of us just there for the ride, ball skills wise. I soon realised that possession was not my thing, my strength lay in intimidation and infuriation. As I don’t know the rules I was not sure where the line between pestering and assault lay, so I sort of winged it. I asked Dave and he told me that I am allowed to shoulder charge the enemy player who has possession. So I did. I also employed my basketball skills, marking a man and making sure that I was always in his way. This seemed to help.

As the game progressed I became bolder and attempted a few kicks. This was mostly unsuccessful, but from time to time I got the ball where I had intended instead of just passing it gently to an enemy player. It assisted me that most of the player were a bit less fit than me so I was more equipped to get where i needed to be. Despite the 6 vs 5 numbers the enemy team dominated, with a score of 10-1. It was at this time that a miracle occurred. I scored a goal! (I actually scored two goals in the course of the game, but own goals are not things that you boast about)

I really enjoyed playing and I will definitely make indoor soccer a weekly fixture. The slight improvement that I noticed during the course of the game is a trend that I hope continues to the point where I become a useful player instead of just making up the numbers.

The addition of soccer to the roster means that when kickboxing starts again I will be doing 4 sports a week. Quite a change from 2 years ago.
